Evaluation of IaaS services on Google Cloud Platform

Setup and Configuration
Google Cloud Platform at the moment almost anything can be done through the new graphical user interface (GUI). And server creation and configuration is now almost absolute minimalism. If you are a person who is not very familiar with this field, you will be very interested.

To make things easier, Google offers a wide selection of preconfigured servers. Network configuration settings are also available and you can set up the server through the user interface (UI). It is worth noting that the network performance of Google Cloud Platform is so stable that you will almost never see lag, even when using Windows Server via remote operation.

Google Cloud Platform Performance
Currently, Google Cloud Platform has 15 regions, each with at least three centers and each with at least one data center. It can be said that Google has a large number of data centers spread around the world.

Each of these data centers is constantly being upgraded. With Google Cloud Platform now offering servers with Intel Skylake processors. The Google Cloud Platform intranet currently runs at up to 16 gigabits per second (Gbps). All of this creates a highly responsive service to compete with other competitors, including AWS and IBM Cloud.

Testing Google Cloud Platform
As for the service itself, to test it we will use Geekbench 4 from Primate Labs. Geekbench is a cross-platform benchmarking application, regardless of operating system. For Google Cloud Platform, I used the minimal configuration n1-standard-1. The platform includes an Intel Xeon Virtual CPU (vCPU), 3.75GB RAM, and 10GB hard drive. The beta now includes Windows Server 2016 Enterprise 64-bit. As is the case with other services, we run Geekbench through Remote Desktop.

Google Cloud Platform offers an average single-core benchmark of 2,827 and an average multi-core score of 2,659. These results are very similar to those of other cloud services that also run Windows Server. It seems that speed is not a significant differentiator for this cloud service.

Pricing and Contracts
The Google Compute Engine Service Level Agreement (SLA) guarantees at least 99.9% uptime. Google Cloud Platform provides per-instance pricing as you create it. 

+ If your monthly uptime percentage is between 99.95% and 99.99%, you will receive a credit equal to 10%. 

+ If it drops from 95% to 99%, then you will get 25%. 

+ If it drops below 95% in a month, then you will get 50% credit. 

I used Google Cloud Platform's pricing program to price a three-tier Ubuntu Linux web application. This quote is made up of two on-demand parts: a load balancer and a website hosting. The web server itself is hosted on the Linux instance g1-small. They are supported by a pair of Linux f1-micro on-demand web servers for the most demanding needs and a Linux (DR) g1-small server.

For database backup, I used 300GB and 4GB storage on Google Cloud Storage Standard. The 150GB database management system (DBMS) itself sits on top of a MySQL Cloud SQL D8 instance. DR DBMS with 300 GB of storage. 

For technical support, I used the minimal support system available. This helpdesk has provided support both via email and through the ticket system. In total, this 8-server web application package costs around $5,358.28 per year.

Google added data centers at breakneck speed. This has led to an unusual phenomenon where the price of using Google Cloud Platform varies slightly by location. However, Google's aggressive pace of data center construction means you'll more than likely find one near you in the future. 

It's also important to note and Google makes sure to emphasize this that Google Cloud Platform is much more than just IaaS . You also get access to KaaS services, a platform for PaaS services , along with other services including a wide selection of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services,...

While this review is aimed at IaaS, Google Cloud Platform, like other cloud services, is not just IaaS. Chances are Google Cloud Platform can do just about anything in the cloud that you might want to do.
