Notes when designing atriums for townhouses

Usually, floors are usually applied to houses with high mezzanines or two or more floors, with a depth of more than 10 m.

The atrium is an architectural solution to optimize natural ventilation and effective light for townhouses, which can overcome the disadvantages of limited area and lack of natural light. In addition, the atrium also helps to create accents, increase visibility, and can take advantage of planting trees to add green space to the house.

You need to know the difference between atrium and skylight, even though the two designs have quite similar effects. A skylight is a space connecting from the first floor to the roof, also known as an opening for a one-story house.

The atrium applies to about 2-3 floors of a house, often found in houses with high mezzanines, with a depth of more than 10 m. If the depth is over 20 m, the homeowner can arrange 2-3 floor vents.

Location

Depending on the actual conditions, the homeowner can choose to place the atrium in the middle or the end of the house, living room, kitchen, stairs... In which, the location of the atrium between the house will optimize natural light and distributed to the surrounding space. When combined with stairs and corridors between spaces, this solution also saves space and increases connectivity.

The living room atrium is also an option chosen by many people, often designed as an open space, arranging more miniatures, rockeries or planting trees below. If placed at the end of the house, the atrium will bring an airy feeling to the kitchen and dining room.

Right from the design concept, homeowners need to carefully calculate the location to balance the areas and maximize the use of the atrium.

Optimizing efficiency

If the atrium is spacious, it is possible to arrange a reading room, work, children's play area or a common living space for the whole family. Under the first floor area, should be used to plant trees, arrange more miniatures, lakes to increase the green space for the house.

To increase the aesthetics, homeowners can choose to decorate the walls in the atrium with stone, tempered glass, and hang chandeliers.

Design Notes

The design of a straight pipe through many floors is rarely applied in practice. Because then it will form an echo transmission pipeline, affecting the privacy of family members.

In particular, the area of corridors, windows and stairs adjacent to the atrium must have railings, barriers, iron flowers... to ensure safety in daily life.

In fact, although there are regulations on the minimum ventilation area in house construction, very few homeowners pay attention to this factor. To help optimize natural light and air circulation, you should still consider designing one or more atriums in your home.

In terms of cost, this solution is less expensive when calculated per m2 of construction, because there is no need to pour concrete floors. If comparing the value of the same m2 of floor and the number of high floors in the same building type, the house with atrium will reduce the cost by 3-7%.
